AMAGANSETT - From the outside, a home in Amagansett looks like a regular building under construction, but in fact, it consists of six steel shipping containers, making it the first structure of its kind on Long Island.

Real estate broker Andrew Anderson bought a parcel of land in Amagansett and brought in the containers that once sailed around the world aboard freight ships to turn them into a 2,000 square-foot eco-friendly home.

Anderson says not only are the containers reused, but the home is being built with all energy-efficient products.

The containers, which spent 15-20 years at sea, can withstand 500 mph winds, and they are also earthquake- and hurricane-resistant, according to the real estate broker.

"Our goal here is to deliver an affordable, sturdy luxury product," Anderson says.

The home is expected to be completed in about six weeks and will go on the market around March with the price tag of $1.5 million. The Beach Box
