WOODBURY - ? Today President Obama and his family joined millions of Americans in honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The civil rights leader and wife Coretta Scott King are buried in Atlanta. Today Obama and the first lady took part in a community service project honoring Dr. King. Obama asked all to observe a national day of service on King?s birthday by volunteering.

Across Long Island, events were held to honor King. Last night, many gathered at St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church in Huntington Station.

Since it was a federal holiday, most schools, banks, government offices and financial markets were closed. In addition, mail was not delivered and the LIRR ran on a holiday schedule with extra trains.
