WOODBURY - A group of Long Island residents recently returned from a trip to Greece, where they spent their time helping tens of thousands of Syrian refugees.

Bob Miller, a lifeguard from Montauk, spent much of his time helping people in rickety, overcrowded boats.

"It was 50 people in a boat sinking. I knew I couldn't save all of them," says Miller.

Denise Schoen, an EMT from Sag Harbor, spent a lot of time with children. She says her most memorable moment was detecting a heart condition in a young girl and being able to get her medical attention.

Others say the experience was life-changing, describing the refugees as thankful for their help.
