EAST YAPHANK - Many of Long Island's bravest say they were able to beat back the massive Suffolk wildfires this week thanks to one heavy duty vehicle, known as a stump-jumper. The tough brush trucks let firefighters quickly and easily get foam and water into thick woods to douse flames at hot spots. Firefighters say they were a critical tool in fighting the huge fires that erupted in Ridge and Manorville this week. They cost anywhere from $90,000 to $200,000 each, but firefighters say they're worth every penny.
