CENTRAL ISLIP - The Long Island Ducks defeated Southern Maryland 6-2 Wednesday evening in their playoff opener.

The defending champs took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

The Ducks opened the scoring in the second inning when Ryan Streeby hit a two-out RBI double. He finished the night with four hits.

Pitcher John Brownell had a career-high 12 strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Game 2 will be played at 6:35 p.m. Thursday evening at Bethpage Ballpark.
