MINEOLA - Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) riders may be able to save money on their commute, courtesy of the fiscal cliff deal.

The deal allows Long Islanders to set aside up to $245 per month through the pre-tax commuter benefit, which is almost double last year's amount. To be eligible, commuters' employers must participate in the program.

But don't count the extra cash just yet. A looming MTA fare hike could raise the price of a ticket by more than 9 percent.
