CENTRAL ISLIP - Legislator John Kennedy is urging colleagues to back moves for more gang enforcement in Suffolk County.

Legislator John Kennedy (R-Smithtown) says that some specialty units, tasked with gang intervention, are being set aside in favor of basic patrols because of fiscal issues.

Bellone tells News 12 that while gang detectives now work out of precincts, they are still regularly conferring with federal agents for information.

Keenan Russell, 21, Derrick Mayes, 21, and Matthew Gilmore, 25, were all shot and killed over a three-day span in Central Islip this past week. Newsday reports that two of the shootings could be MS-13 gang related.
