HEMPSTEAD - Signaling the possibility of a psychological defense, the attorney representing the suspect in a robbery attempt at Roosevelt Field mall said Monday that his client has psychological and drug issues.

As News 12 has reported, 21-year-old Oliver Lee is accused of shooting a worker at the mall after attempting to hold up the Tourneau store for an $18,000 watch on Dec. 22. The mall was packed with Christmas shoppers as Lee struggled with a security guard who was able to wrest the gun from him and subdue him.

Lee, of Queens, appeared in Hempstead court Monday. Attorney Anthony Colleluori says his client is "in a state of shock."

"He's very bright in a lot of ways, but also very confused," Colleluori said. "I have a feeling that drugs may have had something to do with it."

Police say they found 10 oxycodone pills on Lee when he was taken into custody.

Lee, an unemployed high school dropout who was previously arrested for marijuana possession, had posted a picture to Facebook of the handgun allegedly used in the shooting two days before the botched heist. His attorney says it was a cry for help.

"The acting out behavior on Facebook, I think to a very large extent, is like a request, 'Please stop me.' And I don't think people pick it up," Colleluori said.

Lee is facing multiple charges, including first-degree robbery, weapons possession and assault. He was previously ordered held on $750,000 bail, and is due back in court next week.
