EAST SETAUKET - The fallout surrounding state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos' corruption arrest Monday has some lawmakers calling for his resignation.

In the six-count criminal complaint, prosecutors say Skelos used his power and influence to extort money from a real estate and environmental company for his son, Adam. They are facing extortion, fraud and bribery charges.

Suffolk County Republican Chairman John Jay LaValle called for Skelos, New York’s most powerful Republican, to resign from his position. He says the charges tarnishes the public's trust and perception of the party.

"These are very serious charges, and it should have his full focus and attention. I wouldn't see how he could see it differently," said LaValle.

Rep. Peter King (R – Seaford) says Skelos shouldn't be forced to step down.

"The fact is that Dean should have time to reflect, time to work this out. Quite frankly, based on his reputation over the years, I don't think anybody should be pushing him," said Rep. King.

Despite the charges, fellow Republicans in the state Senate gave Skelos a vote of confidence this week allowing him to keep his position as majority leader.
