LYNBROOK - New York state and Nassau County lawmakers, as well as the Long Island Bus Riders Union, rallied at the Lynbrook LIRR station Saturday to try and save the n36 NICE bus route.

The n36 is one of 10 NICE bus routes on the chopping block as the operator tries to deal with a nearly $7 million drop in funding from the county.

Additionally, the n36 is the only route in East Rockaway, running from Lynbrook to East Rockaway, Oceanside, Baldwin and Freeport.

The cuts are scheduled to go into effect in April.

The head of the Long Island Bus Riders Union said the cuts are not just hurting riders, but the entire county.

"It's going to trickle down to the businesses that employ these bus riders. It's going to trickle down to our aging population," says Aaron Watkins-Lopez, of the Long Island Bus Riders Union. He says many health aides for senior citizens rely on the bus routes in order to commute.

A spokesperson for Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano told News 12 that Mangano proposed fully funding NICE, but the county Legislature amended that budget.

If any new revenue is generated, the county says it would restore those cuts.

In a statement, a NICE spokesperson said, "…The cut to the N36 bus route is unavoidable and is a direct result of the Nassau County budget shortfall. We will continue to explore all options available to us to save additional routes."
