MONTAUK - The sale of an alleyway has led to a political scuffle between Democrats and Republicans in Montauk.

The major sticking point of the sale was the lack of an appraisal on the alley. Democrats say that the price of the alleyway set by Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson was an alleged 81 percent discount to a local real estate developer, who happens to be a friend of the supervisor. Republicans say that the $35,000 price tag was fine.

After Democrats performed their own appraisal, they came to the conclusion that the land is worth $184,000. They have since filed a petition to repeal the sale or put it up for a public vote.

Wilkinson says that town attorneys informed him that no appraisal was necessary and denied any wrongdoing.
