HEMPSTEAD - A Queens man pleaded not guilty in Hempstead court Thursday on charges that he dragged a state trooper alongside his car on the Southern State Parkway.

Police say 29-year old Kyheem Kelly was pulled over for texting and driving when he began a violent scuffle with a state trooper.

According to statements made in court, Kelly was told by the trooper that his car would have to be towed away due to an insurance suspension. That's when Kelly is alleged to have taken off with the trooper hanging in the window.

Officers say Kelly's arrest was made only after his car crashed into the center median and two good Samaritans helped the trooper handcuff Kelly.

The trooper needed stitches and suffered back and neck injuries during the incident.

Kelly faces multiple felony assault charges and was held on $300,000 bond. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
