RIVERHEAD - The Long Island mother of a boy with autism was outraged to find a Facebook group deriding people with Asperger syndrome.

The group was called “Aspergers is funny because they're retards.” When Krista de Kerillis, of East Marion, found the page, she immediately asked the social networking site to take it down.

Facebook instead sent her a message saying the page did not violate its community standard on hate speech.

“It is a hateful word and I really think Facebook needs to stop and maybe revisit the bullying policy,” she says.

The page is no longer available, but it’s not clear as to who took it down. News 12 Long Island has reached out to Facebook for information on whether the site changed its policy and why the page was removed, but has not heard back.
