WOODBURY - The U.S. Department of Defense filed charges today against accused Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and others in connection with the terror plot.

The suspected terrorists are charged with planning and executing the 2001 attacks in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa. that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people.

If convicted, the suspects could be sentenced to death. Mohammed is currently being held in U.S. custody in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
