Long Beach councilman Michael Fagan is accused of collecting unemployment illegally. (February 4, 2013)

LONG BEACH - A jury is deliberating in the trial of a Long Beach official accused of collecting unemployment while working for the city.

Prosecutors say Councilman Michael Fagan collected thousands in jobless benefits while serving on the Long Beach City Council.

Fagan is still in office, but faces seven years if convicted of the charges.

Fagan’s attorney claims the Democrat was set up by Republicans in a so-called political witchhunt.
