RIVERHEAD - A judge ruled today that a witness would not be able to name names in the insurance-fraud trial of former Suffolk County Legislator George Guldi (D-Westhampton Beach).
Today's ruling makes it unlikely that the name of the elected official who allegedly took cash payments or campaign contributions in exchange for giving work contracts to a tile company run by Ethan Ellner, Guldi's former friend, will ever be made public.
Prosecutors claim Guldi forged an insurance company's endorsement on a $853,000 check that he received after his Westhampton Beach home burned down in 2008. Guldi allegedly deposited the money in his account, instead of using it to repair the house.
Ellner testified today that Guldi told him he was going to forge the check and go to the city to deposit it.
Guldi is also facing charges in a larger case involving an $82 million mortgage scam.
