CENTRAL ISLIP - A former Suffolk police sergeant accused of pulling over and robbing Latino drivers appeared in court today and showed up without a lawyer.

Former Suffolk Police Sgt. Scott Greene allegedly stole cash from around two dozen Latino drivers during traffic stops in the Farmingville area. He was arrested after surveillance video from a sting operation appeared to show him taking $100 from a driver.

Judge Fernando Camacho scolded Greene and accused him of trying to delay the case. Camacho also appointed an attorney for Greene.

Camacho said he appointed attorney John Manley after Greene delayed his case multiple times claiming either family illness, lack of funds or having to fire two previous lawyers.

Greene and his newly appointed lawyer will appear again in court before the trial starts on Sept. 23.

"This case is going to be tried in the fall," said Judge Camacho. "The complaining witnesses deserve their day in court."

Greene retired last year from his $170,000 a year job at the Suffolk Police Department after 25 years on the force.
