EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Jets have named rookie Geno Smith as their starting quarterback in their home opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mark Sanchez, who took the Jets to consecutive AFC title games during his first two years as starting quarterback, injured his right shoulder in a preseason game against the Giants on Aug. 24.

Coach Rex Ryan says that Sanchez is not ready to play.

The Jets and Bucs will face off on Sunday at 1 p.m. at MetLife Stadium.
