WESTHAMPTON BEACH - Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush was in Westhampton Beach Saturday where he met with Long Islanders at the Hampton Synagogue.

The former two-term Florida governor spoke for about 15 minutes to a crowd of over 500 people.

Several recent polls show Bush trailing GOP frontrunner Donald Trump by double digits among Republican voters. Rather than sure up votes in the first caucus state of Iowa or the first primary state of New Hampshire, Bush spent his afternoon in the Hamptons. When asked why he was on Long Island, the former governor said it was "a great opportunity to speak to a very impressive group of people."

Political insiders say the Hampton Synagogue is an important stop for candidates on both sides of the aisle, as they sweep through the Hamptons to try to raise money for their campaigns. In fact, Bush was flanked by a leading GOP fundraiser, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. Once inside, Bush spoke in part about the need to strengthen America's foreign policy and increase the number of jobs.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R - Shirley) also spoke at the synagogue. He told News 12 that it's too early to endorse any candidates in the crowded GOP field, but he did say he was impressed by Bush's speech.
