WOODBURY - A week after returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Islip Supervisor Tom Croci spoke with News 12 Long Island about the illegal dumping scandal that has rocked his town.

In Croci’s absence, Suffolk District Attorney Tom Spota announced an investigation into the dumping of construction debris in Brentwood's Roberto Clemente Park. The debris was found to have hazardous levels of pesticides, metals and asbestos.

Croci criticized the Town Board’s actions while he was deployed and says the cleanup and reopening of the park is his first priority.

“It's disgusting, if it’s true, that the scope of this could be allowed to occur,” Croci told News 12. “We are going to make sure the recovery of this park happens swiftly.”

Some residents told News 12 that they're glad their supervisor is back on the job to solve this problem.

The town formally blamed Daytree Construction for the dumping. The DA's office is investigating the company, though no charges have been filed. Croci admitted that Daytree donated $4,500 to his election campaign. He says the donation has since been given to a charity.

Croci says he expects to present a cleanup plan for the park to state environmental officials soon.
