WESTBURY - The first day of February marks the beginning of Black History Month, and dozens gathered in Nassau to reflect on the civil rights movement.

For the 11th straight year, the Islamic Center of Long Island in Westbury gathered to celebrate the important month. People from various faiths and walks of life attended.

"The constant reminder is that if it were not for the civil rights movement, many of us, including myself, probably would not be here today," said Eric Hamza Byas, president of the center.

Political leaders, civic leaders, worshipers and others spoke. SUNY Old Westbury President Calvin Butts was the keynote speaker at today's event.
