MASSAPEQUA - Some Long Islanders are out thousands of dollars out of pocket due to insurance companies taking their time to send out checks for Sandy aid.

According to the state Insurance Department, insurance companies have six days to inspect after a claim is filed, and if they make an offer, the homeowner has five days to accept it.

The Department of Financial Services says that there is no law about the number of days in which a claim must be paid, however an insurance company can be fined if it takes too long.
