MERRICK - A Marine from Merrick who lost his leg in a bombing in Afghanistan is getting a surprise hero's welcome today thanks to the efforts of his friends and neighbors.

On his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, Cpl. Kevin Vaughn was injured when his convoy was hit by a roadside bomb.

Vaughn had spent months in Maryland getting rehabilitated, and on his return home, his community of Wenshaw Park is making sure he's welcomed in style, complete with a big banner across the road and a flag display.

Vaughn's mother, Patricia, says it all started a few years ago when she mentioned in passing that she would like to do something special when her son comes home.

"It just took off and everyone started planning," she says.

Vaughn will spend about a month with his family before going back to Maryland for more rehabilitation.
