MELVILLE - The Huntington Township Housing Coaliton is urging the Town of Huntington to settle a lawsuit with the NAACP that has spanned more than a decade.

The lawsuit, filed by the NAACP, claims that a proposed apartment project located on Ruland Road in Melville would be biased against families because the complex would only provide one-bedroom units.

On Dec. 10, the town board is expected to vote on whether to settle with the NAACP and permit a private builder to construct affordable rental units. If the town approves the settlement, the site will become a 117-unit rental complex.

Local group Sweet Hollow Civic Association opposes using the site for rental units. It's calling for ownership units instead.
