RIVERHEAD - A grand jury has named the Huntington Rural Cemetery accountant Scott Meyer in a 21-count indictment for grand larceny and criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Prosecutors say Meyer stole $427,000 from the organization, which has been around since 1851. They say Meyer took advantage of an elderly cemetery board member, who had glaucoma and was legally blind, to unknowingly sign checks over to him.
Meyer also allegedly stole $150,000 from a Greenport resident with dementia. The district attorney's office added that Meyer allegedly stole $240,000 from an elderly man in California.
He was ordered held on $200,000 bond, which his attorney said would be posted.
Meyer is expected back in court on Jan. 10.
