HUNTINGTON - A change to a rental law is angering some landlords in the Town of Huntington.

The law says property owners must get a permit and an independent inspection before renting out a house or apartment. The two-year permit and the application for the inspection cost $550.

Some landlords argue that it’s an unnecessary and expensive burden. But other residents who live near rental properties are applauding the move, saying that rentals have negatively impacted their community.

In a statement to News 12, Huntington spokesperson AJ Carter said in part, "It was enacted to protect tenants and first responders by ensuring that rentals meet town code and safety standards."

The law was first passed in January 2015. It was recently revised to say that condo owners don't need an inspection to rent. And residents who rent out part of a two-family home that they currently occupy are also exempt.
