FLORAL PARK - Some Nassau residents are betting against a plan to build a video lottery gaming facility at the Belmont Park race track.

More than 1,000 people have signed an anti-casino petition online. The petition was launched by two Floral Park women, Mary-Grace Tomecki and Nadia Holubnyczyj-Ortiz, who also run a Facebook page and Twitter account on the issue.

The Nassau OTB has faced some opposition since it announced the plan last month. Some residents feel a gaming facility in the community will impact home values, traffic and public safety.

"These are individuals that are looking to make a quick buck, and don't," says Holubnyczyj-Ortiz. "And these are the same individuals who will then go and commit crimes out of desperation."

Last year, residents in Westbury and Carle Place essentially blocked a plan to build a gaming parlor in their community. Tomecki and Holubnyczyj-Ortiz say they consulted with residents in that area on their efforts, and have also embarked on a letter-writing campaign.

However, some Floral Park residents say they believe a gaming facility will help the village's economy by providing jobs.

News 12 reached out to the office of County Executive Ed Mangano on the issue, but did not hear back. A Nassau OTB spokesperson declined to comment.
