MT. SINAI - Hundreds of Long Islanders braved cold temperatures and icy waters during the annual Polar Bear Plunge at Cedar Beach today.

A group of nearly 200 brave souls sprinted into the icy waters to raise money for children with cancer at St. Jude's Hospital.

Many participants say the event hits close to home. Jason Woods, 15, says he took the frigid dip for his mother, who is battling colon cancer.

Organizers say this year's Polar Bear Plunge raised $1,000 for cancer research.
