NORTHPORT - Members of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs questioned officials from the Northport VA today.
Their investigation stems from a recent suicide and other reported problems at the facility.
Peter Kaisen, 76, of Islip, killed himself in the VA parking lot last month after the New York Times says he was unable to see an emergency room doctor.
Earlier this year, five operating rooms were shut down when black particles fell from the ventilation ducts.
Elected leaders from Long Island were also present at the hearing. They say patient care needs to be improved.
"It seems to me that one of the deficiencies is that there just isn't enough people communicating with your customers to understand where there's a problem, and to solve it before it grows into a crisis that requires a congressional hearing," says Rep. Steve Israel.
Members of the committee say they received some useful answers from Northport officials, but the investigation into the facility is still ongoing.
