RONKONKOMA - Homeowners in Ronkonkoma say the Long Island Rail Road has been a bad neighbor while it continues work on its double track project in the community.

The project is meant to improve service and reliability on the LIRR's Ronkonkoma branch, while boosting the local economy.

Neighbors on Sycamore Street say loud construction work at 4 a.m. has disturbed the quality of life in the area. Mike Balestrieri says heavy trucks cracked his Belgian block driveway. He also says that the vibration from heavy machinery has created cracks in his walls and ceiling.

Balestrieri says the railroad is asking for an engineer's report to prove the damage was caused by LIRR trucks.

Bob Gormley, who says he has similar damage to his home, says he wants the LIRR to reimburse him.

"They might be Goliath and I might be David, but in the biblical story, we know who won that [fight]," says Gormley.

An LIRR spokesman says every effort has been made to make the construction phase easier on residents.  They say the double track project is expected to be complete by 2019.
