MOUNT SINAI - Lightning hit as many as three Suffolk County homes last night during an intense line of thunderstorms.

Lightning is believed to have hit homes in Terryville and Mount Sinai, and may have sparked a fire on South Harbor Road in Eatons Neck.

The homeowners in Terryville whose home was struck say the strike was their second hit in three years and that it started a gas fire.

According to the National Weather Service, between 20 and 30 thunderstorms roll across Long Island each year and more than 22,000 lightning strikes hit New York each year.
