WILLISTON - A Holocaust survivor from Hewlett spoke to students at Schechter School in Williston Park Thursday to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“You are the very last generation that will hear these stories firsthand,” Marion Blumenthal Lazan told the students.

The 80-year-old survivor was held at the notorious Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Germany along with her family. With harsh detail and clarity, she recounted the unimaginable nightmare of her life during Nazi Germany.

“We had heard about extermination and gas chambers, so we never were sure when the faucets were turned on what would come out - water or gas,” she said.

Despite the difficult story and the horrors she suffered, she asked the students to take with them a message of perseverance and tolerance.

“She was really inspiring. She taught all of us important messages that I will never forget,” said Sara Blau.
