UNIONDALE - Thousands of Hofstra University students are signing a petition, urging more security in the Uniondale neighborhood next to campus.

The petition comes after Andrea Rebello was accidentally shot by a police officer during a home invasion.

Recent graduate Ronald Olazola says he never once considered moving to off-campus neighborhoods in Uniondale or Hempstead during his four years at Hofstra. He says Hofstra administrators need to take drastic steps to enhance off-campus security.

The online petition demands that administrators start an off-campus registry for landlords renting to students, increase security in areas that neighbor the campus and establish a sanctioned "Greek Row."

Students want those steps to be taken so that those in fraternities, sororities and athletic teams can live off-campus within closer proximity to the school. Olazola says he's supportive but doubts campus officials will get behind it.

"Because the safety of our students and community members is our highest priority, it is crucial that we work collaboratively with the police departments to enhance safety in our area," Hofstra president Stuart Rabinowitz said in a statement. "Be assured that our conversations are ongoing and our voice will be heard."

A Hofstra spokesperson tells News 12 Long Island that several things mentioned in the petition are already in place.
