NEW HYDE PARK - Doctors at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park are marveling over the rapid recovery of a Brentwood teen who recently had a rare throat tumor removed.

Dr. Lee Smith and Dr. David Zeltsman performed a nine-hour operation on 13-year-old Elizabeth Petitfrere, who had a 95 percent blockage in her larynx and windpipe due to a benign tumor.

They were able to completely remove the tumor and put her airway back together.

Petitfrere attended a luncheon today at the medical center where she is now able to breathe freely and eat normally; something she has not been able to do for months.

"It's such a joy to see her breathing and eating so well so quickly after surgery," said Smith.
