Hempstead woman accused of neglecting dog

HEMPSTEAD - ? Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced the arrest of a Hempstead woman who has been charged with neglecting her dog.

Officials say Annisa John, 39, neglected her dog?s hygiene and failed to provide veterinary treatment for a serious leg wound.

Officials visited John?s home after receiving a tip that there was a neglected dog on the property. Investigators found a small, white, male dog named 'Snoopy' suffering from a variety of serious ailments.According to investigators, the dog was underweight for its breed, age and gender, and he was infested with fleas. A veterinarian estimated that the dog was neglected for a significant period of time and the leg wound took at least a month to form. John was arrested Wednesday at her Thorne Avenue home by DA investigators and charged with one misdemeanor count of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals and failure to provide proper sustenance. The suspect's mother, Eda John, says her daughter is too busy and she is too sick to take care of Snoopy.John faces up to a year in jail if convicted and is due back in court on Oct. 1. Meanwhile, investigators took Snoopy to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, where they say he is doing much better.
