HEMPSTEAD - Within minutes of the start of Wednesday night’s special meeting of the Hempstead School Board, residents were told the meeting would be held behind closed doors.

Sources tell News 12 the board called the special meeting to discuss personnel matters, including a review of the superintendent, Susan Johnson. The school's attorney was tight-lipped about the details of who was being reviewed and why.

Residents who hoped to attend a public school board meeting told News 12 they were frustrated with the lack of transparency.

As News 12 has reported, the board has been mired in controversy, including an alleged grade fixing scandal, allegations of voter fraud and chaotic school board meetings.

The Hempstead School Board has scheduled another special meeting for Thursday at 5 p.m. Sources tell News 12 that the Board will continue its formal evaluation of Superintendent Susan Johnson and take a vote once the review is completed.
