The cause of the fire is still being investigated. (February 16, 2013)

HEMPSTEAD - Residents were finally able to return to the Hempstead building that went up in flames last weekend, killing two.

Residents returned to the apartment complex to try and salvage the belongings they have left. The fire ripped through the apartment complex last Saturday morning during the blizzard, killing 38-year-old Guadalupe Ramirez and her 8-year-old son.

Village officials told News 12 that the owner has been slapped with half a dozen violations in the past year. People who live there say there have been at least three fires in the past 10 years.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. A fund has also been set up to help pay for Ramirez and her son's funeral.
