HEMPSTEAD - Police have a new plan to fight crime on the south side of Hempstead Village after a recent rise in homicides, shootings and assaults.Hempstead Police Chief Mike McGowan says he's boosting patrols, increasing undercover operations and working with the community more, techniques he says dramatically lowered crime on Terrace Avenue, which is known as a hotbed of drugs and gun violence. Hempstead officials say they'll also be employing new technology, like a 311 telephone system that will allow residents to report crimes and tips anonymously.Mayor Wayne Hall also says he'd also like to deploy a ShotSpotter system, which quickly pinpoints gunfire. Officials say they aren't sure why crime has risen on the south side, but they believe it may be connected to the weakened economy.
