GARDEN CITY - Police say they've arrested a man who allegedly broke into three Garden City homes left dark by Superstorm Sandy power outages.

Police say 46-year-old Artie Jackson, of Hempstead, broke into three homes last week. He allegedly stole property and cars, and opened fire while inside two of the homes. He's also accused of assaulting a woman.

Police say the Garden City looting set off a panic in the area during the days after the storm. Authorities asked LIPA to concentrate efforts in power restoration to help stop the home invasions.

Officials say they finally caught up with Jackson and arrested him on Sunday. Some of the stolen property was recovered.
