HEMPSTEAD - Dozens of Hempstead High School students staged a sit-in to protest problems at their school.

The graduation rate was only 38 percent last year, and Hempstead is one of the state's lowest performing districts. Hempstead High School is also embroiled in a grade-changing scandal.

Students say their transcripts aren't available for colleges because the "book is missing." They say they are also frustrated that the high school has had 12 principals in 14 years.

Residents plan to file a formal petition with the state this afternoon to investigate allegations of fraud at the school.
