HEMPSTEAD - A Hempstead mother is calling for extra safety measures on her street after her 4-year-old son was hit by a car earlier this week.
Shalena Carter says her son Christian was trying to cross Albermarle Avenue near his home when the driver struck him. He is in a wheelchair, recovering from a fractured hip and broken clavicle.
Carter says she wants either a stop sign or a sign telling drivers to slow down posted on her street.
"It's a terrible tragedy and something needs to be done," says a neighbor. "Maybe a couple of speed bumps would help the situation."
Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall tells News 12 Long Island he will look into the matter.
