WOODBURY - Officials have reopened 19 Nassau County beaches that were temporarily closed on concerns about bacteria in the water after last week's heavy rainfall. Nassau's Department of Health had banned swimming at 14 beaches on the Long Island Sound and five along the Atlantic coast. Experts say storm runoff from heavy rains can wash many different types of materials into the water, but health officials are particularly concerned about bacteria from sewage.Nassau Department of Health closes 19 beaches today
