HAMPTON BAYS - East End homeowners are puzzled and angry after finding KKK pamphlets in their mailboxes.

Some Hampton Bays residents received literature from the KKK explaining the organization’s principles and asking people to pay the $20 membership fee.

Neighbors told News 12 they were shocked to discover the KKK looking for membership on their street.

Southampton Town Police Lt. James Kiernan says that while distributing the pamphlets is legal as part of the First Amendment, he would like to talk with whomever handed them out.

“Our mission is to provide safety for all the people and make sure it doesn't cross over the line into harassment,” said Kiernan. “We'd like to find out who's doing it and reach out to them and see what their intent is.”

The pamphlets contain a post office box number in North Carolina. It  offers membership to any "white man or woman of Christian faith" who will pledge "100 percent loyalty to the Klan and its goals."

Attempts to reach the KKK leadership named on the brochure were unsuccessful.
