JONES BEACH - An organization says that a feral cat colony at Jones Beach is threatening the area’s endangered piping plovers.

The American Bird Conservancy is asking that colony be removed, but volunteers who feed the cats say that isn’t the case.

Stephanie Capuano, who helps look after the feral cats, says that the colony has been contained for over 14 years and that they aren’t harming anyone, including the piping plovers.

News 12 Long Island is told that many of the feral cats living at Jones Beach were abandoned by their previous owners.

Jones Beach State Park says that it has had no reported incidents of cats attacking the birds, and that it is looking into humane ways to resolve the issue.
