GREAT NECK - The village of Great Neck ticketed a dying cancer patient who was not able to shovel her sidewalk this winter.

Great Neck was hit with about 3 feet of snow this past February. Village ordinance mandates that residents must clean the sidewalks in front of their home within 24 hours after a storm.

At the time, resident Mary Ramanan was bed-ridden and in hospice care while battling brain cancer. The village warned the family about the unshoveled sidewalk and eventually issued a $150 ticket.

Ramanan passed away over the weekend. Some neighbors say that even though village rules are important, some understanding may be in order.

The village of Great Neck told News 12 that Mary Ramanan's relatives have agreed to pay the fine and that the matter is over.
