WOODBURY - ? President Obama?s administration and the Department of Transportation is awarding $2.2 billion in grants for 22 high-speed rail projects to 15 states in the country. Officials say more than $350 million of the money will be allocated to New York and will be used for new routes to relieve congestion on the LIRR. Officials say New York is receiving the money because Florida turned down the federal government?s offer to spend more than $2 billion on a high-speed rail project.
