MINEOLA - Grant Smith, of Long Beach, has been charged with hate crimes in an alleged attack on two black men at Eisenhower Park's White Course.

Smith is accused of yelling racial slurs and assaulting two men in their mid-60s with a club over golf course etiquette. The disagreement allegedly arose when Smith asked to play ahead of the two men because he was on the course alone.

Police say Smith fled the scene but later told detectives that the two men attacked him first.

Smith is charged with menacing and assault as a hate crime. The NAACP is also calling for Smith to be banned from the course.
