FARMINGDALE - Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a new opioid drug bill into law at Farmingdale State College Wednesday.

The bill limits most opioid prescriptions from a 30-day supply to a seven-day supply, in an effort to prevent patients from developing addictions. It also requires insurance companies to cover initial drug treatment without prior approval.

Lastly, the law requires people using pain pills long-term to attend a three-hour class on pain management and addiction every three years.

"Suffolk County had the highest level of overdoses in the state when it came to opioids," says Gov. Cuomo. "We are losing young people at a death rate that is frightening."
