BRENTWOOD - A Good Samaritan is being hailed as a hero for risking his life to rescue five strangers from a burning Brentwood home this morning.

Erick Landeros says he was driving by the home on Rugby Street when he saw it was on fire. After failing to awaken the residents by shouting, Landeros broke down the door, woke up the five people inside and helped them escape to safety.

Kathy Calcano has lived in the home that her father built for nearly 50 years and says she didn't even realize it was on fire.

"If it wasn't for this man, I probably wouldn't be here," Calcano says.

Calcano lives on the bottom floor with her husband and rents out the top floor to four college students.

Everyone, including a dog and a pet rabbit, made it out alive and without injury.

When asked what made him run toward the burning home, Landeros said no human being deserved to die like that.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe a burning cigarette is to blame.
