LONG BEACH - The man who admitted driving drunk, hitting a girl and then dragging her 600 feet in Long Beach was sentenced today to eight years in prison.

German Gutierrez pleaded guilty earlier this summer to multiple DWI and assault charges for hitting 15-year-old Sarah Colletti on her bike last year. Officials say German Gutierrez's blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

Colletti has had five surgeries since the crash and possibly faces two more. In her victim’s statement, she addressed the injuries Gutierrez caused.

“You dragged me and burned me so bad that on certain parts of my body I had no skin left and my bones were exposed,” she wrote.

Gutierrez left the courtroom sobbing. He told the court he was “truly remorseful for the horrific events.”

In addition to his sentence, Gutierrez had his license suspended for one year and must use a DWI ignition interlock device when he is released from prison.

News 12 Long Island is told Colletti’s family plans to pursue damages in civil court.
